Just North of Katherine, the original Leight Creek crossing on Emungalan Road would be flooded during the wet season isolating a number of properties on the other side of the creek.
The construction of the new bridge and realignement of the road greatly increases the flood immunity of the road and decreases the time of closure.
The other project aspects include:
- The stream was flowing at the time of construction, dewatering and divesion of the water was completed with sheet piling and water pipes to transfer stream flow downstream.
- The constructon of the 6m high bladewall, required significant planning to ensure bracing of the formwork and bracing of the wall during initial concrete curing.
- Due to the high velocity of the stream flow significant rock protection was required to protect the batters and downsream bed of the stream.
- The realignement of the road allowed the low level crossing to be utilised during construction.
- 2 km of road works to realign the road for the new bridge location.
